Northern Virginia Association of the Deaf
Lecture on Abraham Lincoln
February 12, 2009
The new NVAD Board looked disorganized as Jeanne Lavelle tries to get the board
members lined up.
Now with the new Board properly lined up, VAD Treasurer Tim Lavelle begins the swearing-in ceremony.
"I, Jeanne Lavelle, President, . . ."
Hmmm . . . can someone please wake Donna Graff up?
" . . . pledge to perform the duty of the office . . ."
After the swearing-in ceremony there was a brief break for chatting and
picture-taking.
Others watch the picture-taking of the new Board.
The audience was ready for the lecture to begin.

Gary Viall, who chairs the Lecture Series, introduces the speakers by giving
their brief bios.
Gary is wearing a red tie to commemorate the Valentine's Day.
Melanie Williams explains why Abraham Lincoln was her favorite President.
Peggy talks about the moves the Lincolns made from Kentucky to Indiana and then
to Illinois.
"In 1844, the Lincolns purchased their only home they ever owned in
Springfield, Illinois."
Peggy and Melanie answer a question about melancholy (depression) Abraham
Lincoln experienced throughout his life.
Paul Daniels attended a high school in Kentucky in 1960's. Here Paul
explains the negative attitude of Kentucky people
toward Abraham Lincoln since the Civil War. This attitude hampered efforts
to restore Lincoln's birthplace home for many years
while funds were easily acquired to restore Lincoln's childhood home in Indiana
and Lincoln's house in Springfield, Illinois.
Answering a question about how long it took to count the votes of the population
in the 1860 presidential election, Steve Williams explains that the
electoral college was used instead of popularity vote to put a candidate in the
White Office. It took too long to count the population vote back then.
The cake honors Abraham Lincoln and Peggy Daniels who share the same birthday,
February 12.
If Abraham Lincoln was still alive in 2009, he would have been 200 years old.
Peggy poses for the camera before "letting the cake have it."
A close look at the beautiful cake.
More posing with the cake.
In the spirit of Valentine's Day, Gary shares his red tie with Melanie.
Unfortunately, the tie isn't long enough for Peggy.
Hmmm . . . who gets the roses?
Gary Viall, Melanie Williams, and Peggy Daniels pose with the cake.
Peggy shows how it is done.
