Emylou Chute was among high school seniors from each of Virginia’s 11 congressional districts to win the 15th annual Harry F. Byrd Jr. Leadership awards.

Smoking Ban Passes In Virginia
The Virginia General Assembly gave final approval Thursday to a plan that prohibits smoking in most of the state's bars and restaurants, handing Gov. Timothy M. Kaine one of his first significant legislative victories.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has obtained a court order halting a Ponzi scheme that specifically targeted members of the Deaf community in the United States and Japan.

A juvenile court hearing for two former students at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind accused of plotting to kill numerous faculty and students was postponed Monday afternoon.

Dr. Michael Kemp passes away
Dr. W. Michael "Mike"  Kemp died last Monday, November 24, 2008.  He resided in Maryland and Virginia over 35 years.  The plans of the funeral and memorial service have not been announced yet.

John Lopez, a long time resident of Arlington, VA, dedicated most of his life working to improve the quality of life of both Deaf & Hard of Hearing and Latino communities.

Gallaudet's New Aesthetic of Openness 
Gallaudet for the first time is designing a streetscape and architecture to bring together deaf and hearing people.  Gallaudet officials say they need restaurants and other attractions to help make their campus more of a draw.  The Washington Post article.

Redskins Ordered To Continue Captions
A federal judge in Greenbelt has ruled that the Washington Redskins must continue to run captioned play-by-play at FedEx Field to offer deaf and hard-of-hearing fans the full game experience.
